Meeting Britney Spears; my experience.
For as long as I can remember meeting Britney Spears has been one of my biggest dreams. Well, on April 29th, 2015 that lifelong dream became true. This is my story.
As soon as Britney Spears announced her Las Vegas residency, I knew I had to go! The first Britney concert I went to was The Circus Starring: Britney Spears, and it was one of the best nights of my life. I couldn’t hold in my tears of happiness as Britney lowered onto the stage in her iconic ringleader outfit. I also went to her Femme Fatale Tour, which was also an amazing experience! Aside from seeing the show, I got to meet Jessie Malakouti from Jesse and the Toyboys as a bonus! Britney was on fire that night, and I will never forget leaving the Tacoma Dome hearing the echo of everyone singing Till The World Ends.
Fast forward about 4 years. We arrived in Vegas the night before Britney’s Piece of Me show. My husband, sister, and I got there at about 10 PM. Though I was lacking sleep from travel, I could hardly rest my eyes knowing I was going to meet my idol in less than 24 hours.
I woke up the next morning ready to get my big day started. We explored Vegas a little, and then came back to Planet Hollywood to get ready for our night at the Axis! Before I did anything though, I had to eat! We went to Gordon Ramsay’s Burgr, which was delicious! I was excited to try his restaurant, but I could only think about one thing. We finished dinner, and I decided to check at the box office to make sure I got there in time. My ticket said to be there around 7:30 PM, so I had plenty of time…or so I thought. I walked up to the counter and gave them my name. A security guard told me that the backstage tour had already started. I FREAKED OUT! He told me that they did another one before the show, and to not worry. I didn’t believe him at all, so I went to the other counter and the attendant said that there is only one tour, and he escorted me to the stage. I was so thankful that I went and checked what time it started, otherwise I would have missed the backstage tour!
A security guard took me onto the stage. There I saw Fe (Britney’s assistant) surrounded by about 10 other fans that looked in awe of what was happening. There was something magical about being on that stage, looking out into the theater. We were standing where Britney Spears performs! Fe explained some of the technical information about the Axis Theater, and showed us some of the props for the show. First I got to see the angel wings she wears for Everytime. Fe told us they were built by the same team that made the Victoria’s Secret angel wings, and that they are able do lots of different light patterns. We also saw the stools Britney sits on for Lucky, which are actually from The Circus Tour. The last prop we were shown was the metal ball she descends in for the opening song, Work Bitch. The ball sits high up on the ceiling, until Britney is ready to get into it during the opening of the show.
We then went up a flight of stairs to the costume room. The amazing part about going up to that room was that you walk past Britney’s dressing room. The warm, heavenly smell of vanilla candles fills the air as you walk by. As you enter the costume room you are surrounded by beautiful, one-of-a-kind costumes, shoes, and accessories. There were costumes from all of Britney’s tours, and even pieces that she has never worn. We got to meet some of the people that help fix, and design her outfits. They explained that Britney has the final say in what exactly she wants to wear, and that she is very vocal if she likes or doesn’t like a certain piece. One interesting tidbit that Fe shared, was that there is a warehouse located in Louisiana that is full of every Britney outfit, stage prop, etc. It was her job to pick out the iconic outfits that are featured in the lobby of the Axis Theater from that warehouse. She said that she wants to pick a few more pieces out, and display them in place of the current outfits.
We then traveled back down to the stage where Fe told us about the dancers, and showed us where they get changed. She also brought up the notorious wigs that Britney wears during the meet and greets and shows, and explained that Britney’s team are aware of the negative responses about them. Fe told us that Britney will not be using them anymore, but she was disappointed because it was thousands of dollars worth of beautiful wigs.
As we came to the end of the backstage tour, the group proceeded to head back to the theater. We got to touch the wooden props that are used during Me Against The Music as we exited! Fe told us to come back in about 20 minutes, and to do anything we needed before the meet and greet. I got prepped in the bathroom, and then went into the lobby to check out the costumes that were featured. It was so cool to be right in front of the legendary outfits that have shaped Britney’s career! From the red jumpsuit of Oops…I Did It Again to her blue flight attendant costume from Toxic.
Finally, the moment I had been waiting for my whole life had arrived. We all met up with Fe and she took us outside behind the theater. There we waited for a good 30 minutes. We mingled and shared stories of how Britney has impacted our lives. Fe explained that she was aware of those famous meet and greet pictures online, and told us to just be calm and polite to Britney to avoid making her feel uncomfortable. She also stated that there is no time limit, but that we will know when it is time to make our exit. Security was strong the whole night, but it was from this moment on that they watched our every move. One of the security guards made me hide my shield necklace inside my shirt because it could be considered a weapon! He also stated that there is no asking for autographs, and to be courteous of Britney’s space.
We then moved into a small hallway filled with lockers, with two more security guards that had us empty our pockets. After another 15-20 minutes, the door to the stage where Britney was located opened up. It was time. This was it. My heart was racing. I kept fixing my hair. I could barely keep my composure.
I was probably 5th in line and when it was my turn I was led out the door onto the dim-lit stage. I was passed from one security guard to another that led me around the backdrop for the picture. There she was, illuminated by the stage lights. It was Britney freakin’ Spears. She was wearing a cream colored top, with jeans, and heels. She looked absolutely stunning! I was so full of adrenaline, excitement, and nervousness that everything was almost a blur. I walked up to her. Britney asked my name. Basically speechless, I told her that my name was Danny. I wrapped my arm around her waist, and we took our picture. Not surprisingly, Britney smelled like vanilla! She told me she was excited for me to see the show, and I said that I couldn’t wait to see it! The security guard signaled it was time. I let Britney know she was amazing, and we said our goodbyes.
It was short, but sweet. I could have talked to Britney forever, but I knew time was very limited.
Security told me to go back through the door and outside. Still starstruck, I wasn’t sure where to head from there. Others from the meet and greet arrived pretty quickly, and we all figured out where to go eventually. As I made it to the theater, I spotted my husband and sister. I made my way up to them, and told them how awesome the whole experience was. I was still in shock, and so happy that I ended up crying! People around me were asking questions, like if she was just as beautiful in person, and I told them absolutely.
A few minutes later it was showtime. I stayed with my sister and husband for the opening number, and then went to my front and center seat. Britney danced the night away, in the most amazing show I have ever seen: Piece Of Me.
